FORCED to RECORD Other People's Songs…Band Did 1 ORIGINAL in SECRET…Became a SMASH—Professor of Rock
Coming up…. the story of Fox on the Run by 70s British supergroup Sweet. This band had relied heavily on a famous production team to write all of their big hits, but Sweet was sick of singing only the songs they wrote. So the band decided to show what they could do. They had written a good song but no one thought the song had potential to be a single, except for this one executive at the band’s record label. Only thing is this executive wasn’t getting ANY cooperation from management to retool the track, so when the management and production team was out of town, the guys secretly went into the studio and produced the new version themselves. Sweet proved everyone wrong as Fox on the Run became one of their biggest hits. We retrace the steps of this covert operation that led to a huge international hit, and the beginning of a new era for an immensely influential Glam Rock quartet…NEXT on Professor of Rock.”

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On today’s episode we’re going the Catchy ditty Fox on the Run by the Sweet
Singer Brian Connelly and drummer Mick Tucker recruited bass player Steve Priest to assemble The Sweat Shop in ’68, but just a few weeks before they released their debut record, they found out there was another band named The Sweat Shop, so they changed their name to The Sweet. After adding lead guitarist Andy Scott, The Sweet hooked up with hitmakers Mike Chapman & Nicky Chinn and began one of the most successful 4 year run on the pop charts in UK history. Between ’71 and ’74, Chapman & Chinn penned all 11 of the British Top 40 hit singles for The Sweet, including their first hit “Funny Funny,” “Little Willy, “Blockbuster,” and “The Ballroom Blitz,” that were also big hits in the U.S.
Success should have been….sweet, for the quartet, but by ’74, they were tired of the perception that they were just puppets to the Chapman/ Chinn puppeteers. So, when an opportunity presented itself to change that stigma, the band took advantage and covertly re-recorded an album track and reconstructed it into one of their biggest hits. The transformed track was none other than “Fox on the Run.
At the beginning of the Rock Era in the 50s, through the 60’s, the most popular solo artists and groups were essentially the talent that performed material written by someone else. That’s one of the main reasons why acts like Buddy Holly & the Crickets, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles were so revered.. they created and performed...

“Love is like oxygen” when I was a kid I thought was ELO. Still one of my favorites. My older sister had the 45 rpm of Fox on the Run and played it day and night when new. Didn’t realize until a teenager what this song was about. 😮

When I became aware of music and music videos Sweet were a huge part of the music landscape with Ballroom Blitz. Which featured on any music show or “marathon” we had in those days. They ended up being hugely popular in Australia, and I saw the Andy version of the band live in a 1000 standing room venue in my local town in the late 80’s. They were still great.

Sweet,........ Enough said. Fox on the run, Ballroom blitz, Little Willy, Love is like oxygen, Action and numerous other notables. They never got the recognition they deserved. Brian Connoly was a phenomenal vocalist, Steve Priest on Bass, Mick Tucker on drums, and Andy Scott with the power Lead guitar, they were a force to be dealt with. I have tons of memories woven into the tapestry of my brightly colored youth with Sweet tunes interwoven with those memories. To put it simply,........... Sweet! I'll never forget them or the music. Brian, Steve, Mick are all gone now, but they'll always be remembered. Rest in peace guys, YOU ROCKED OUR GENERATION.

The FIRST album I ever bought was Desolation Boulevard (Australian RCA version), 100% only to get 'Fox On The Run'. I've always tried to imagine how his girlfriend must have felt when he told her "You're built like a car." What a great line! When you said they were afraid of being confused with another song titled Get it on, I was thinking of a completely different song than the one you played a clip from. Plenty of songs have the same title as others. Hmm, that might make an interesting theme for a UA-cam playlist.

I had Desolation Boulvevard on 8-track. I liked most of the songs on it a great deal. The album title is in the lyrics of "The Six Teens." I don't think any other album covered so much about certain subjects, Sweet F.A., ACDC, No You Don't, Solid Gold Brass, songs that would like not appear on the radio in the mid 70s. But they were broadcast on the 6x9s in my 1968 Satellite.😉

I have never quite understood why Sweet never got the credit they deserved. Here are my best guesses: I suspect some of their early confections (pun intended) were off-putting to people who wanted to think of Sweet as a rock band. "Little Willy", "Wig Wam Bam" to name two. Regardless, I happen to like those songs. Even the big radio hits, "Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox on the Run" are the types of songs that so many people enjoy but are embarrassed to admit. If you were blasting either of them in your car with the windows down and someone rolled up beside you, you'd probably turn it down or roll up the windows. I get it. But, "Give a Wink" put that all to rest. At least I thought it did. Until I discovered almost no one has ever heard it. People know "Action" but, apparently never sought out the album, which is just killer. I could write for a long time about Sweet and I may write more comments later. For now, two things I can't go without mentioning. 1) Mick Tucker is truly one of the most underrated rock drummers. 2) If you are a fan of Sweet, type the following into a UA-cam search "Sweet Musikladen 1974. Watch all the videos and you can thank me later. And, one more nod to Mick, if you watch the "Sweet Musikladen 1974" videos, take some time to watch Mick, especially on "The Man With The Golden Arm." He is fun to watch and you can see the joy he has performing. From a long time big fan of Sweet, who rarely hears them mentioned or discussed, thanks for this one, Professor.
